BotP Close-up 048

Post: # 517Post Bobkat »

This week, we're going to Vega, Baby! (Ok, that's corny)

But our favorite heroes go after Zoltar to prevent Spectra's take over of the "tiny" planet. Curious, there's a piece of animation in this episode that I swear was copied for the movie "Contact" - Vega was at the center of that adventure as well. It's the scene with what appears to be a mountainside city, very circular in nature. It's been awhile since I watched either but it would be fun to compare.

Anyway, here's the plot with The Other Jason's write-up here: https://www.battleoftheplanets.info/ep48.html

E48: Raid on a Nearby Planet

Act One

7-Zark-7 is in Center Neptune "watchful eye of the universe." The center monitors threats to Earth and to other friendly planets within the Intergalactic Alliance. Planet Vega has been receiving threats lately from Spectra. Zark stands in his helmet and throws his boomerang to turn on his monitors. He wants to see what the latest happenings are. Zark nearly melts his Condensers when thinking about Spectra threatening "little" Vega. He flies to his monitors and sees an emergency signal from Vega but wonders if it's another threat or a full-scale attack. Zark sets his Receptors to send out Red Alert if necessary.

On Vega, the emergency signal originated from an island where a very important defense installation sits. Spectra is aiming right for it with the captain notifying Zoltar via video. Zoltar tells him to strike at will. The captain orders Phase 1 and the crew wears protective glasses prior to firing their main weapon that destroys everything in its path. Spectra keeps at it attacking several installations and structures – on land and underwater. They've taken out defenses, a power generation center and aim for a rocket field. The weapon destroys Vega's rockets and launch facilities and could potentially surrender.

Zoltar confers with his captain who explains the targets are in the mech's master computer. Zoltar is pleased with the attacks thus far and tells the captain to hold. If needed, they will commence attack for total destruction. It depends on whether or not Vega surrenders. Zoltar then confers with the Luminous One happily reporting that plans are proceeding well. The Great Spirit warns Zoltar not to be over-confident and brings up the concern that Earth will come to Vega's aid. Zoltar says Earth doesn't have the will to help but if they do, Spectra will be ready. The Great Spirit tells Zoltar they need to hold Vega no matter what. Zoltar says they'll achieve two goals: subjecticate Vega and split the Alliance.

Zark has notified G-Force of the situation on Vega. Mark wants to know why Spectra has decided to suddenly attack Vega. Chief Anderson makes it plain: if Spectra succeeds, they're practically next door neighbors with Earth. Tiny says, "Wow, there goes the neighborhood." Chief Anderson says they're obligated by treaty to help but they will also be helping themselves. Mark adds that Vega is essentially blocking for them and the chief verifies this. Chief Anderson goes on saying Vega has taken a beating and the more they delay the worse the situation. Keyop chimes in, "Get cooking." Princess asks about the weapon but the only thing the chief has is that it can destroy whole cities in one swipe. Jason wonders how they're supposed to defeat it with the chief adding he never said the mission would be easy. Chief Anderson says if the team can't handle it, no one can. Mark tells they can, just point them in the right direction. The chief points to a "hotspot" on a map. Mark rallies his team for outer space, they transmute, board the Phoenix and launch for Vega.

After flying through space, the Phoenix arrives at Vega and the Sea of Vega. The Science Research Center is the next logical target and the team lands momentarily. They see Spectra's latest mech approach. Jason recognizes it right away and Mark orders Turbo Jets and Tiny to jet them out of the way. They want to lure the mech away from the Center. Jason wants to fire some rockets but Mark tells him to play it cool and allow them to make the first move. Jason cracks, "It might be our last." Tiny says they'll find out in about three seconds. Spectra fires their main weapon on the Phoenix but Mark tells the team, "It's only a simple rollercoaster ride."

The Phoenix flies out of the ray but Spectra comes at them again. The light is blinding to Tiny who struggles or control. Based on what he's seeing, the Spectran captain orders the ship to pursue and destroy. Mark encourages Tiny as the mech closes in. Mark orders emergency evasive actions and Tiny complies. The Phoenix barely escapes a pair of blasts. The ship is nicked by the ray on its tail section. Mark tells Tiny, "Chop chop!" to get away. Tiny feels like he's been sandbagged while Jason jumps in to take over. Suddenly, the Phoenix flames out at the tail and goes down toward the sea. She dives in and the Spectran captain believes the Phoenix is sunk. Zoltar is pleased by the latest events.

On the sea bottom, the team has been jostled around. Keyop comes to and decides to take matters into his own hands. He launches in his buggy and says, "No more Nice Guy."

Act Two

Zark makes his way to his Ready Room for a ten second break while Keyop is off trying to find Spectra's mech and their secret base. 1-Rover-1 yips at him because he's hungry and Zark can't believe so he gives Rover a wrench. The last time Zark gave Rover a wrench, the dog unscrewed his nose! Zark hopes for a report from Vega soon because he's worried about Keyop going off on his own.

The Spectra mech flies to its secret base and is sucked in by a sand tornado. Keyop watches and says, "There goes Big Gopher." Later that night, the team catches up with Keyop with the Phoenix. Mark tells Keyop he did great but if he can get them all into the ray machine, it'll be even better. Keyop takes off in his buggy and drills into the spot where the ray machine went. He breaks through and radios up to his teammates. Some goons show up as the buggy sits. The team flies down into the base without the buggy in sight.

When they land, Princess asks, "Anyone see the local welcome wagon?" Mark answers, "I bet the reception committee is close by." A vehicle makes its way to where they landed and the team has to jump out of the way. When the vehicle stops, the four G-Forcers take over the four goons and force them back into the base for a "guided tour."

G-Force stays down but they are able to look around and Mark notes they have every weapon imaginable except for slingshots. Jason adds the plan is to throw all the weaponry on Vega. Mark and Jason banter back and forth, "They think. … They might." Jason jumps out of the vehicle before the vehicle proceeds further. Tiny then jumps out at another spot leaving Mark and Princess in the vehicle "to continue the tour." They enter a room where there's a large rocket. Mark says this might be their control center and would like to take it out of commission. Princess wonders if Tiny and Keyop are planning something, that is, if they're okay.

Mark then sees some movement and tells Princess to get down. It's Zoltar who puts spotlights on the pair. He informs them he's been watching them since they entered. Mark shouts back that Zoltar's machine is about to be taken out because they're going to cut off his power. "You won't have to worry about your electric bill." Zoltar finds Mark's crack amusing – not really. However, he points out Keyop who is tied up and being shoved into a rocket by a goon. Princess calls out to him but they watch him being loaded. The captain tells them that Keyop will be the first passenger on the ray machine aimed at Earth.

Goons make final preparations on the rocket including fueling. Mark and Princess launch as Princess goes after Keyop. Mark, Jason, and Tiny give chase to Zoltar and the captain but Zoltar kicks down the ladder to prevent them from following. Meanwhile, Princess frees Keyop and she sets and explosive on the rocket before they "scram."

Zoltar and the captain take off in the ray machine. The three boys are desperate – Jason and Tiny fire their cableguns and hold Mark between them as they hang on. The boys are buffeted by the winds. Zoltar sees an opportunity to finish off three members and orders the captain to fire. Mark makes a crazy move to fire his sonic boomerang to jam the machine. Meanwhile, Keyop and Princess escape the base in his buggy with her saying her yo-yo bombs will take care of the base. Zoltar and the captain realize there's a problem and the boys fly down to the ground. Keyop and Princess are caught in the tornado too as the bombs tick down. The boys watch Keyop's buggy make a break for it and everything explodes at once!

Keyop's buggy crashes with Keyop and Princess thrown in opposite directions. Zoltar makes his escape but G-Force is in no position to give chase. Mark's boomerang lands in the sand. Jason asks who took out the base with Tiny answering that he thinks it was Princess' bombs. Keyop's grumblings make the three boys go check on their teammates. Mark helps Princess stand while Jason and Tiny help Keyop. Jason jokes, "That must be the ostrich I've heard so much about, always sticking its head in the sand." Tiny cracks, "I think he lost most of his tail feathers," while he pulls Keyop out. Keyop says, "Comedians!" Mark happily says they're all present and accounted for including the hero, Keyop! He tells them, "You may touch me." Tiny says they should take him back to the lab for a replacement!

Mark tells them the mission is over and it's time to get on board the Phoenix and make the long journey home. As the team flies into the sunrise, Keyop finally gets his buggy airborne. Tiny says it couldn't be used as a dishwasher. Zark says he has given them flight plans and clearance for return to Earth. Zark wonders what Keyop will use for a replacement while his buggy is being repaired. Rover helicopters over to Zark and yips. Zark says that while Rover's a good flier, he can't part with him as they are needed in Nerve Center to keep constant watch for G-Force. The robots complete the G-Force salute.
