BotP Close-up 058

Post: # 544Post Bobkat »

This week is one of my favorites! The Giant from Planet Zyr! Zoltar has his eyes on a laser the Federation is perfecting and has just the mech to steal it - a four headed statue! Tensions run high with some great smart-aleck remarks throughout. Mark is even knocked out for a time! (holy cow, it's wild!) Enjoy this week's plot! :)

The Other Jason's write-up is here: https://www.battleoftheplanets.info/ep58.html

E58: Giant from Planet Zyr

Act One

7-Zark-7 is in the "famous" underwater complex Center Neptune keeping an eye out for alien invaders. Zark says they don't get any time off and he has been working non-stop since "Program 2020, Code X-40, Time Phase 90." He claims to be at the end of his Resistors but the only "R and R" he gets is rust removal. He's expecting to go to the Robot Rehabilitation Center for a complete recycle any day now. He returns to his monitors detecting a security breach in B Sector, one of the most sensitive and important research installations. Scientists are trying to formulate a jet beam to counteract Spectra's latest indestructible metal.

At the installation, scientists are about to conduct the final test of the beam. One of the scientists says if the test works, the beam should cut Spectra's metal "like butter." The gun is put into place and the laser is able to slice the metal, so success. But it's short lived because Spectra's latest mech, a four-faced giant, lands and steals the laser! It flies off with Earth's newest weapon.

A fleet of fighters launch trying to stop the mech. Zark calls Chief Anderson with a Double Red Alert due to the B Sector incident. He tells Chief Anderson G-Force has been contacted and "briefing read-out on Code 70." Meanwhile, the team meets with Chief Anderson. Mark is skeptical by "the flying giant" as the chief explains the reports are from frightened eyewitnesses. Chief Anderson tells them that one fact is undeniable: their "most advanced weapon, the Jet Cutter" has been stolen. The giant was the thief but there isn't much to go on. The chief shows them some film from their remote sky cameras showing the dispatched planes giving chase. However, the mech was programmed to anticipate the chase. The results are not pretty.

Chief Anderson tells the team they know as much as anyone else with Mark saying, "It's just about nothing." Princess is shocked by Mark's attitude and the commander walks back his comment. He's angry that Spectra has their best weapon and Chief Anderson agrees that Spectra is behind the theft and they have a new base on planet Zyr. Chief Anderson then walks out without answering Keyop's question. Mark tells the smallest member that Zyr is in the Milky Way. Keyop says they need to "blast off." Mark tells him to "pack your toothbrush" and the team launches out Center Neptune.

The Phoenix flies to planet Zyr and arrive a bit later. When Tiny says they're honing in on the planet, Mark says it's "a guessing game" because they don't know if the giant is there. Jason sits at his radar station saying, "He better be. That burned out planet sure isn't 'Fun City' or 'Vacation Wonderland.'" Mark says this is where Zark told them to look but they have to cover the whole planet. "Where does a 50 foot giant hang out anyway?" Keyop answers, "Anyplace he wants to!" Tiny brings the Phoenix in, ordering them to "hit the burners" and "Retro-jets on." He tells the team to "buckle up for de-orbit." Mark tells him to keep going and the Phoenix comes in for a landing.

The team disembarks leaving Tiny on board. Mark looks around calling it "dry, dead, and deserted" with only some nearby cliff dwellings. Mark says it's a place "only a space giant could love." Princess points out the four-faced statue in the distance. Jason points out that Tiny put them down "right on target." Mark says it looks like they're waiting for the team and calls Tiny to stand by. Tiny answers, "Don't call us, we'll call you."

The four decide to "move in" while staying low and out of sight. Princess wonders how they're suppose to get to the giant with Keyop answering, "Beanstalk?" Mark tells Princess and Keyop to run a diversion while he and Jason will make their way up. Princess and Keyop run in the opposite direction but they're all under Spectra's surveillance.

Mark and Jason arrive at the mouth of a cave but it's weird with a bunch of statues inside. Mark calls it "strange" and Jason likens it to "an old wax museum." They enter the cave and wind up back-to-back as the statues' eyes light up, start making noises and move. They open their mouths revealing sharp teeth that can chomp through rock. The heads launch to the boys with Jason cracking, "I hate to say this, but they're losing their heads." Mark says it's time to split and they wind up separated with Mark running deeper into the cave. Jason is cutoff when hot lava starts spewing from where the heads used to be.

Mark runs the cave out and finds the giant being worked on. Bars emerge out of the rock blocking the opening. Mark puts his hand on it but it's electrified and it knocks him out! A moth lands on the bars while Mark is passed out and is immediately incinerated.

Zoltar is pleased at their progress thus far in grabbing Earth's weapon and now having G-Force within their grasp. When the commander, wearing a red and yellow Buddha-like costume, asks if they should launch against Earth. Zoltar says yes but they need to destroy the base on Zyr first because it has served its purpose. Later, Zoltar orders his men to launch the Giant Gautama in "victory over Earth." The giant marches out and destroys with the Jet Cutter.

On the Phoenix, Mark wakes up with his teammates surrounding him. Mark sits up wondering what happened to him. Jason explains he was zapped by an electrical charge meant to delay the team. In the meantime, Zoltar has launched his giant against Earth. Mark is sure he blew it pounding his fist into the floor but Princess tells him they just have to work faster now. Mark orders them to blast off but Tiny says they already have while Mark was out. The Phoenix flies back to Earth.

Act Two

Zark talks to Mark via video. The commander reports they're passing Orion and Zark clears them for de-orbit. Zark's Transducer tells him that the giant has already landed with the new Jet Cutter. However, his Gyro-Activators can't give him an exact location so all he can do is send G-Force in a direction and hope for the best.

The Phoenix enters Earth's atmosphere nearing where Zark thinks Spectra will strike next. Mark pulls up a map finding several energy plants that the giant could be going after. The giant walks its way to a target with all cities in the area ordered to evacuate. Tiny asks to go up in altitude "for a faster ride" and Mark okays it. Tiny up the altitude and they close in.

The giant wreaks havoc by destroying several buildings. It walks into the ocean in order to arrive at an energy complex on an island. Princess and Keyop pick up a strong signal from the ocean. Jason cracks, "Bigfoot's gone surfing" while Tiny skims the surface. Underwater, the giant continues its march. It surfaces near the complex and the Phoenix starts firing bird missiles at it. The commander says they "walked right into the Phoenix!" However, the bird missiles have no effect until hitting an ankle and the giant falls down on one knee.

The giant stands again and fires the laser. Jason says, "He sure knows how to roll with a punch." Another laser blast hits the wing. The faces rotate with each one taking a turn to fire the laser. Tiny flies the Phoenix out of range but the commander says to keep firing. Tiny says he doesn't know how much longer he can keep up the acrobatics. Keyop asks, "Parachutes, anyone?" Princess wonders if there's any way they can stop the giant. Mark says they can but only if they luck out. The giant keeps firing as Tiny keeps twisting the Phoenix out of the way but Spectra lands a hit. Jason says the last shot was "too close for comfort." Mark is beyond frustrated because he's got nothing.

The giant keeps firing slicing the tail, taking out the landing gear door and it falls ripping off. Tiny says maybe they should back out but Princess and Mark both push back. Tiny gets more altitude and Mark tells Tiny to circle in to find his opening then "full jets." The back and forth continues with Keyop calling the giant "Goliath." Mark paraphrases the story where "a little guy named David" defeated him. Jason tells Mark if he knows any little guys named David, now's the time to call him. Mark says he doesn't need 'David,' he knows Zark!

Princess tells the team to "hold everything" because she's receiving a coded message from Zark. They have figured out how to defeated the giant! It is a matter of overheating (1000 degrees) the Jet Cutter laser. So Tiny flies the Phoenix to a higher altitude saying, "Why don't we just shake our fists at it!?" Mark tells them to prep for "Phase Three" or "Operation: Fireball." Mark says it's the only way.

The teammates go to their individual vehicles with Mark reporting they're ready for "IP, Warp Through." Princess is covered by a shield on her bike prior to transmuting into the Fiery Phoenix. They split up diving toward the giant as it closes in on the energy complex. The goons see the Fiery Phoenix close in, calling it "fire devil!" The commander tells them it's only G-Force in one of their many forms and to keep firing. Four smaller firebirds close with two (Princess and Jason) aiming for the engines. Two more (Mark and Keyop) aim at the head as all four lasers fire. Then the main ship gives the fatal blow exploding the giant and it falls to pieces into the ocean. The head is still firing as it sinks.

On the shore, Mark says the giant is finally as dried up as the planet from which it came. He hopes he never has to go to Zyr again with Princess adding she doesn't mind going to those places – she's always happy to come home. Mark agrees with Keyop saying, "Home Sweet Home." Jason kids Keyop about the corny sentiment but says there's not a decent place to hang-glide between there and the Big Dipper.

Zark says he's happy to see the team back on Earth safely. He knows Spectra is out there still plotting because they'll never give up on taking over Earth. Zark says if he was a "betting robot" that the next alert would be about Spectra attacking Earth. The Red Alert flashes.
