I went ahead and sent him an email regarding the disabled registration. I've seen folks say the same thing on the Reddit forum.

Yeah, that's something I've been wondering for years. Feels like the forum would have more life injected in if more people could come to engage! I know one friend managed to get a magic registration link years ago, but rest of us haven't been as lucky.
