Katse's expressions

Here's a question, and this really works for either series since the episodes are part of both Gatchaman and BotP.
In episodes 2 and 4 Katse is sans pink lips, they're drawn like the other male character lips. It got me to wondering, where they experimenting with facial expressions? Katse's only visible feature is his lips, they're not as expressive without the pink added to them. By adding the pink, his emotions are more easily conveyable than the plain male lips. I know a lot of folks think he's wearing lipstick, but I always felt it was more about expression. And even if it is, males wearing lipstick and makeup in Japan is a thing, and not weird like it is to some Americans.
To support my theory, I will use Disney for an example. Pay attention to Disney's horses, especially Spirit of the Cimarron, they have eyebrows. Horses don't have eyebrows in real life. But Disney put them there because horses don't talk, and it was the best way to help show emotion in the animal.
Just wanted to throw that out there for discussion. I like having an active forum.

I love having a real discussion too! I think you are right. They were added to give character and uniqueness. I didnt notice until now how much the lips add to the character. Normally, when a characters lips are notable in a 70's anime its usually for unfortunate reasons. Nice catch there Stardust!

Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron is actually DreamWorks I believe but yes.

When Donkey is transformed into a white stallion, he has eyebrows - horses don't have eyebrows. I know from the Shrek films they did do that deliberately to convey expression for the horse.

I thought there were a few eps where Katse had more masculine lips. Thank you for that Stardust!!

I think you're right, Dreamworks was Cimarron. But DIsney started that with the horses. Look at Sleeping Beauty and Tangled, Maximus definitely has eyebrows.

I love Maximus - yes, he had eyebrows.
