Tried going on a search for Tatsunoko in old TV programming magazines online. This article seems to suggest Sandy Frank was considering adapting Gatchaman II, which would have started airing at the time, or at the least was figuring out other ways to expand "Battle of the Planets" that didn't quite take.
It's fun to imagine what kind of universe that could've been like...

As much as I love Battle Of The Planets I am glad we only got the first series in that form. I think that the best series is the first one anyway.
