For whatever reason, this thread has been giving me fits to post. So it's broken up into pieces. Here's the rest:
We know Zoltar is the leader of Spectra, but he answers to a literal higher power in The Luminous One.
Zoltar is part of a family as we see his sister, Mala, on a pair of occasions ("The Galaxy Girls" and "Rage of the Robotoids"). She's cunning, smart and as slippery in her escapes as her brother! Mala is blank slate too. She's in charge of an elite team of women assassins and it would be nice to explore her more.
Speaking of blank slates, Zoltar is pretty much one as well. For all the interactions he has with our favorite team, we don't really know that much about him. We know he wants to rule Earth and in turn, the Federation. He's willing to go to great lengths to accomplish that goal. His trickery includes blackmail, kidnapping, impersonating dead people ("The Space Mummy" and "Attack of the Alien Wasp" although this second example could be debated) and the ability to escape against all odds. It would be nice to see some of his backstory used to propel the overall story forward.
Lastly, there's the Spirit. We know the thing is old at least 3000 years old ("Raid on Riga") and saved Spectra from certain death. Whether this is ecological demise or actual planet exploding stuff is unknown. Because of this, we know the Spirit is an actual alien. However, where is it from? Why did it pick Spectra to save? Why is it so hell-bent to take over Earth and the Federation? Did these entities do something to it in the distant past that made it seek revenge? Is that its motivation? Or is it just plain greed?
More to ponder and hope the filmmakers take a good look at
Battle to create a great story and film.
