Actual Physical Violence on Battle Of The Planets

Post: # 1341Post Cure DragonEagle 255 »

I saw a clip from Gatchaman's version of "G Force In The Future" and while it was business as usual with that scene where Ken beats the crap out of Berg Katse, it also let one blatant blow to the face in! It was a bit comedic and there were some cartoony transition sequences that may or may not be in the Gatchaman original. That makes me realize it might be interesting to know which episodes allowed a bit more physicality to the violence. I know it is okay for robots to be destroyed and guns are also allowed to a surprising degree, but punches and kicks are a no no.

While the vast majority of the physical fights were edited down to mere suggestions,* there were a number of episodes that showed contact and violence. Usually contact from hands and feet, but sometimes from the G-Force team members' weapons. It took a while, but as I was going through the series looking for other things, I tried to keep track of times where there were hits, kicks, etc. shown on screen or in shadow, or very heavily suggested.

Here's a list... while I tried to make it complete, it may not be. There could be other instances. If anyone remembers anything else, please let us know! I also listed the items you mentioned in "G-Force in the Future."

Anyhow... here are some examples (in roughly production order) - with a few illustrations

----------------

001 - Attack of the Space Terrapin. Mark jumps on a pair of Spectra soldiers after they use the Whirlwind Pyramid. Keyop and Princess use their weapons to wrap up the hands of one soldier and knock a rifle out another's. Mark uses his Sonic boomerang to concuss four soldiers.

037 - Orion, Wonder Dog of Space. Jason uses his Spacemobile to knock one snowmobile-riding Spectra soldier into another, causing them both to crash at high speed. Orion jumps on and bites another Spectra soldier. This is mostly seen in shadow at the start, but we see Orion on top of the solider in later shots.

036 - Siege of the Squids. Mark throws his Sonic Boomerang at Zoltar, hitting him in the wrist.

021 - Mad New Ruler of Spectra. Princess and Keyop knock Spectra soldiers off the backs of robot horses.

027 - Race Against Disaster. Mark knocks a Spectra soldier out from behind. We don't see the strike or hear a 'thud,' but the solider falls and Mark is standing behind him.

002 - Rescue of the Astronauts. Keyop's weapon wraps around the head of a Spectra soldier. Mark flip/throws another one off an elevator, then holds the first one by the neck with both hands as he rides back up.

011 - Space Rocket Escort. Mark and Cronus have a minor dust-up. Mark throws a punch that Cronus catches in his hand.

048 - Raid on a Nearby Planet. Mark, Jason, Princess and Tiny drop from the top of an underground tunnel and kick four Spectra soldiers in their heads to knock them out.

Mark and Tiny rain from above

068 - Silent City. The G-Force members leap out of the way an instant before an aircraft carrier deck is filled with bullet holes (although you do not see the guns firing at them). They kick and punch a lot of Spectra soldiers on the deck. Tiny collides with many and throws more off the ship into the water below.

Keyop konks a goon!

024 - The Musical Mummy. Princess and Keyop are forced down the side of a cliff by the Musical Mummy, and it knocks Keyop out momentarily. Mark kicks a Blackbird in the neck. Princess and Keyop strike a couple Blackbirds with their individual weapons and knock them out.

059 - Silent City. Princess punches Killian when he's holding a gun on Mark (both she and Mark are disguised as Spectra soldiers).

Yes, that's Princess in disguise!

042 - Prisoners in Space. Jason, Princess and Keyop kick and throw various Spectra soldiers around. Jason fires the cable connected to his gun at a Spectra soldier (Tiny in disguise) and hits him in the face with it.

016 - Microfilm Mystery. Zoltar and Mark fight. Mark flips him. Zoltar chokes Mark, then he elbows Zoltar in the ribs.

086 - Super Space Spies. Keyop throws his weapon around the neck and head of the Spectra commander which knocks him out. Tiny throws a series of Spectra soldiers, smacks some of their heads against his own, tackles groups of them at a time and plows through others. Keyop kicks a Spectra soldier in the head. Two others swing their rifles at Keyop, but miss and hit each other in the heads.

Keyop konks a... hey, wait a second!

035 - Demons of the Desert. Mark throws Zoltar down a large staircase.

049 - Keyop Does it All. Keyop open hand slaps a Spectra soldier in the face (hard) and elbows him on the back of his neck. Later, Keyop leaps from a ledge to land on and attack another Spectra soldier. Mark's Sonic Boomerang strikes several soldiers (in shadow), Keyop bites one on the head and Tiny manhandles about ten at a time.

097 - Rockets Out of Control. Secretary Claybourn is "attacked and seriously injured by unknown assailants," according to 7-Zark-7. We don't see the attack on camera, but his hand falls into foreground frame in front of his secretary.

003 - The Space Mummy. Mark punches the disguised Zoltar in Dr. Sweet's home repeatedly. Some on-camera, some in shadow.

014 - Perilous Pleasure Cruise. Mark knocks a Spectra soldier into freezing water. Princess strikes one in the face with her yo-yo, also knocking him into the water. Mark kicks a Spectra solider in the head, and Princess hits another in the head with her yo-yo. Professor Wilde sacrifices himself to save Angie, Princess and Mark. Mark strikes two Galactor soldiers with his Sonic Boomerang.

Goon, meet foot.

100 - G-Force in the Future. Jason punches a Spectra soldier in the face, while saying, "Make way for G-Force!" The soldier recites part of "Mary Had a Little Lamb," as, "Zoltar had a little Lamb, his fleece was black as..." Then he falls over, knocked out. Mark crashes through a glass panel to grab Zoltar. Then the two of them fall several stories to the ground (with Zoltar on the bottom) from a hanging airplane. Mark kicks the gun out of a Spectra soldier's arms. Tiny jumps on the heads of Spectra soldiers (seen in shadow). He then beats and throws one Spectra soldier into a group of others. Mark grabs a Spectra soldier in a neck hold, and he fires his gun which ignites a barrel full of fuel. The other soldiers are caught in the fire, but retreat to safety.

Jason delivers a nice, square one (bet that felt good!)!

088 - Tentacles From Outer Space. We don't see what happened, but Korag drops a limp Professor Starke to the ground after "visiting" him in his prison cell. Mark and Jason punch Korag repeatedly, to no effect. Korag is knocked out when he activates a secret gimmick in Jason's gun which fires backward and strikes him on the chin.

060 - Giant Space Bat. Another of the few times we see Mark's Sonic Boomerang actually strike someone (Jim and Lotak). The original Japanese animation, which used the character's shadows to show the impact, actually worked for the Battle team. They kept the scene, which likely would have been otherwise edited to remove the hit.

077 - The Duplicate King. Tiny throws a group of Spectra soldiers. Later, Mark strikes a Blackbird in the head, and Tiny picks one up, preparing to throw him. There is some more implied violence here, but not much seen.

032 - Curse of the Cuttlefish - Part I. Jinpei tackles a fake mugger around the lower legs. Princess strikes another with a knee and an uppercut (seen in shadow). Later, Princess kicks, throws and flips other Spectra attackers.

046 - The Giant Gila Monster. Zeno jumps and attacks the Spectra commander, which causes the Gila Monster ship to plunge down a cliff, killing them both (and all the rest of the Spectra ship pilots). Physical violence that leads directly to deaths.

069 - Peril in the Pyramids. The "invaders" to the temple appear to get killed by a ray beam. Mark grabs Zoltar around the neck.

008 - Fearful Sea Anemone. Jason flips into a Spectra soldier and steals his machine gun. Mark punches at Zoltar, who escapes into the wall behind him.

026 - The Bat-Ray Bombers. Tiny grabs a Spectra soldier by the calf and spin-throws him into another. He flips another soldier to the ground.

039 - The Fierce Flowers - Part I. Mark jumps his motorcycle right on top of another cycle-riding Spectra soldier.

040 - The Fierce Flowers - Part II. Keyop kicks a Spectra soldier in the face. Mark flips one to the ground.

This is uncanny! That kid's good... and consistent!

----------------

I was curious to see if they let more go later into the production of the series. But it doesn't appear to be the case.

*Like when you saw G-Force leap into a room full of Spectra soldiers, then the next scene would be them leaving saying something like, "We gotta get moving!" What happened to the room full of armed goons? Did they just give up and walk away?
